Meet James Smith
WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND?
I’ve worked in financial services for over 20 years in New Zealand and overseas. Most of this time has been spent as a private client adviser, but also as an investment consultant to large financial institutions and more recently as a business and compliance manager.
I’m currently enjoying my ‘second stint’ at Cambridge Partners, having worked one of the former companies (Bradley Nuttall), between 2006 and 2012. Ultimately, the pull of being back in New Zealand was too great and I re-joined the firm in 2018 after spending previous 6 years in London.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE?
I work between the advisory and client support teams and really enjoy our collaborative team environment. I get involved with many different projects from compliance to investment management, to general business management and love the variety of the different areas of the firm of which I can get involved.
WHAT QUALITIES MAKE YOU WELL SUITED TO THIS POSITION?
I have a strong grounding in investment governance being a CFA Charterholder and having been a Director and Senior Investment Consulting in a large consulting firm. I also hold the certificate in Financial Risk Management (FRM) from the Global Asociation of Risk Professionals (GARP) and am a Chartered Enterprise Risk Management Actuary (CERA) so have a good understanding of managing business risk and general management.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING PART OF CAMBRIDGE PARTNERS?
I enjoy being part of our team – we all work hard for the best possible outcomes for our clients. We care about our clients and work together in supportive environment.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING OUTSIDE OF WORK HOURS?
I live in North Canterbury and enjoy spending time with my teenage family and as well as enjoying the recreational opportunities on our door step including trail running, mountain biking and swimming.
